In short: Ruling the Delhi Sultanate from 1451 to 1526, the Lodi dynasty was the final power before the Mughal Empire. Despite their initial strength, the Lodis were ultimately undone by internal political fractures, a depleted treasury, and a fatal inability to adapt to the revolutionary military technology of the sixteenth century.

Founded by Bahlul Lodi in 1451, the dynasty replaced the Sayyid rulers and initially brought stability to the region through a confederacy of Afghan and Turkish chiefs. His successor, Sikandar Lodi, expanded the empire’s reach, notably annexing Bihar and shifting the capital to Agra in 1504. Sikandar was a complex figure who patronized Persian poetry and learning while simultaneously enforcing strict Sunni orthodoxy, which included the destruction of Hindu temples and the execution of a Brahman who equated his faith with Islam.

By the time Ibrahim Lodi ascended the throne in 1517, the empire faced severe structural decay. Trade routes had collapsed, depleting the state treasury and leaving the administration vulnerable to internal dissent. Ibrahim’s attempts at royal absolutism alienated his Pashtun nobles, leading to widespread rebellions. His uncle, Alam Khan, and the governor of Lahore, Daulat Khan, eventually invited the Timurid ruler Babur to intervene, setting the stage for the dynasty's final collapse.

The decisive moment arrived in April 1526 at the battle of Panipat. While Ibrahim commanded a massive force of 100,000 men and 1,000 elephants, his army relied on outmoded infantry tactics. Babur, commanding only 24,000 men, utilized muskets and artillery—technologies the Lodi forces had never encountered in warfare. Ibrahim was killed in the conflict, and his defeat marked the end of the Lodi dynasty. Although his brother, Mahmud Lodi, continued to resist the Mughals at the battles of Khanwa in 1527 and Ghaghra in 1529, the Lodi territories were ultimately absorbed into the rising Mughal Empire.
