How Did a Lightbulb Man Unleash Three Titans in a Tea Tin?
In short: The narrative structure of LittleBigPlanet 3 involves a seemingly contained threat—three Titans sealed away. However, the catalyst for their release is an unexpected act of creation by a seemingly benign character, fundamentally altering the world's creative potential.
The initial premise of the adventure, as narrated by Stephen Fry, involves Sackboy being sent to Bunkum by Newton, a lightbulb person. Newton's mother, Nana Pud, had previously sealed three Titans away within a tea tin, a warning that Newton himself seemed to disregard. The story progresses through several distinct locations, including Manglewood Swamp and The Ziggurat, where the heroes reawaken guardians like Oddsock and Toggle by collecting marbles. Each reawakening is preceded by Newton unleashing a Titan to impede their progress.
The core conflict escalates when Newton, after initially appearing to be working with the heroes, reveals that his plan was to unleash the Titans to boost Bunkum's creativity. This revelation leads him to open the jar, resulting in him becoming corrupted by the Titans' influence and subsequently flinging Sackboy from the roof. The heroes eventually manage to reawaken Swoop in Bunkum Lagoon, cornering Newton and trapping Sackboy.
In a final confrontation, Newton, in a fit of fury, releases the third Titan from his own fortress, an act that causes him to revert to his normal self. The five heroes—Sackboy, Toggle, Swoop, Oddsock, and the recovered Newton—manage to blow up the third Titan while destroying Newton's fortress. They are ultimately rescued by Newton's father, Captain Pud, and subsequently transported back to the main LittleBigPlanet world via a new portal built by Newton, concluding the adventure.
The development history shows that while the game was announced at E3 2014 and began development in 2011, the core gameplay remains rooted in the mechanics of the first two installments. Furthermore, the game's narrative is fully voice-acted, a departure from previous titles where voice acting was limited to cutscenes.
