How a college gymnast became a multi-million dollar digital empire
In short: Before she was a Sports Illustrated cover model, Livvy Dunne was a dedicated trainee in New Jersey. Today, she stands as a blueprint for the modern athlete, leveraging a massive social media following to command seven-figure endorsement deals and redefine the economics of collegiate sports.
Olivia Paige Dunne’s journey from a young gymnast training in Paramus to a global influencer is inseparable from the shifting landscape of athletic compensation. While her competitive career at LSU featured high-scoring performances on the uneven bars and floor exercise, her true impact emerged following the July 2021 NCAA rule change. This allowed athletes to profit from their Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL), and Dunne was uniquely positioned to capitalize, possessing a combined following of millions across Instagram and TikTok.
By early 2023, Dunne had become the most-followed NCAA athlete on social media, with an estimated NIL valuation of $3.3 million. Her commercial reach is immense; she has secured partnerships with brands like Vuori and American Eagle Outfitters, and has even revealed receiving over $500,000 for a single social media post. Her influence extends beyond mere endorsements into philanthropy and media, including the launch of The Livvy Fund to assist other female LSU athletes in securing deals, and starring in the Prime Video docuseries, The Money Game: LSU.
However, her rapid ascent has not been without friction. Her digital presence has occasionally sparked academic scrutiny, such as when an LSU statement addressed a TikTok video promoting an AI service, and her massive fanbase has occasionally led to security concerns at gymnastics meets. Despite the pressures of injuries—including significant setbacks like torn labrums and a bicep tear—and the intense spotlight, Dunne has maintained a prominent place in culture, earning spots on both the Forbes 30 under 30 and the TIME100 Creators lists.
