How a 25-point underdog toppled the Alabama dynasty
In short: In 2007, the Louisiana–Monroe Warhawks achieved the impossible. Entering the game as massive underdogs, they stunned Nick Saban’s Alabama Crimson Tide with a 21–14 victory. It remains one of the most significant upsets in college football history, a moment of pure magic for a program defined by grit and unexpected triumphs.
The University of Louisiana at Monroe (ULM) football program has a storied, if turbulent, history. Founded in 1931, the team spent its early decades as a junior college before transitioning to senior college football in 1951. For much of its existence, the team competed as the Northeast Louisiana Indians, a name the university retired in 2006 to adopt the 'Warhawks' identity following concerns regarding the offensive nature of the previous mascot.
The program's greatest achievement came in 1987. Under head coach Pat Collins and led by All-American quarterback Stan Humphries, the Indians secured the NCAA Division I-AA National Championship. In a dramatic final in Pocatello, Idaho, the team overcame a 42–28 deficit against the Marshall Thundering Herd to win 43–42. This era also saw the program move up to Division I-A (now FBS) in 1994, immediately proving its mettle by defeating Kentucky 21–14.
While the program has faced long periods of struggle—including a thirteen-year bowl drought that is the longest among all NCAA Division I FBS teams—the 2012 season provided a bright spark. Led by quarterback Kolton Browning, the Warhawks defeated eighth-ranked Arkansas 34–31 in overtime and reached the Independence Bowl, their first and only bowl appearance to date. Despite the highs and lows, the program remains a resilient fixture in the Sun Belt Conference, defined by its ability to disrupt the established hierarchy of college football.
