How a vanished trophy and vacated wins shaped Louisiana's football legacy
In short: The Ragin' Cajuns are defined by more than just their 13–1 season or their seat at the Sun Belt Conference. Their history is a complex tapestry of identity shifts, from Bulldogs to Cajuns, marked by significant NCAA sanctions and unique local proclamations that preserved their hard-won titles.
The program's identity has undergone several formal transformations since its inception in 1901 as Southwestern Louisiana Industrial Institute. For over fifty years, the teams were known as the Bulldogs before officially adopting the Ragin' Cajuns moniker in 1974. The university's name changed to the University of Louisiana at Lafayette in 1999, leading to a brief period where the team was called Louisiana–Lafayette before dropping 'Lafayette' entirely in 2017.
The program's record is complicated by NCAA violations that forced them to vacate several key achievements. While they won four consecutive New Orleans Bowls between 2011 and 2014, two of those victories were later stripped. Similarly, a conference championship from 2013 was vacated, and head coach Hudspeth's personal record saw a significant reduction from 51–38 to 29–38 due to these violations.
Despite these setbacks, the program reached historic heights under Billy Napier between 2018 and 2021. This era produced the school's first national ranking and four consecutive division championships. A notable moment of local intervention occurred in 2020: when a pandemic prevented a championship game against Coastal Carolina, Lafayette Mayor-President Josh Guillory issued an executive proclamation declaring Louisiana the sole Sun Belt champions to prevent their accomplishments from being diminished.
The team's home life has also shifted geographically. They moved from McNaspy Stadium—demolished in 2000—to Our Lady of Lourdes Stadium (known as 'The Swamp') in 1970. This venue is currently undergoing a $75 million renovation to become Cajun Field at Our Lady of Lourdes Stadium, featuring premium suites and modern amenities funded by a $15 million donation.
