From N'Djamena to the Premier League: the rapid ascent of Loum Tchaouna
In short: Born in Chad and raised in France, this pacy winger has navigated a whirlwind journey through Europe's top leagues. From a breakout performance in the Under-19 championships to high-stakes transfers in Italy and England, Tchauna's career is a masterclass in the volatile nature of modern football.
Loum Tchaouna's professional trajectory began in earnest in 2021. Just weeks after his 18th birthday, the Rennes academy product made his Ligue 1 debut on 26 September 2021 during a 1–1 draw against Bordeaux. While his early years at Rennes saw him primarily utilized as a substitute, his talent was undeniable on the international stage. During the 2022 UEFA European Under-19 Championship in Slovakia, Tchaouna emerged as a standout star, finishing as the tournament's top scorer with four goals in four appearances and earning a place in the Team of the Tournament.
His club career has since been defined by frequent movement and shifting fortunes. After a loan spell at Dijon, where he scored his first senior goal against Nîmes in May 2023, he moved to the Italian side Salernitana in August 2023. Despite Salernitana's difficult 2023–24 campaign, Tchaouna proved his individual worth, contributing six goals and four assists in 35 matches. This prompted a €8.4 million move to Lazio in July 2024, where he matched his release clause to sign a five-year contract.
At Lazio, Tchaouna experienced the highs of European competition, scoring against Ajax in the Europa League, but also the lows of squad rotation and financial restructuring. Following a stint at Burnley in 2025—a move motivated by a conversation with manager Scott Parker—he eventually signed a five-year deal with Coventry City in July 2026. Throughout his journey, Tchaouna has remained a fixture in the French national setup, representing the nation from the under-16 level through to the under-21 squad.
