How a childhood of hymns shaped a modern R&B innovator
In short: Born into a strict Christian household where secular music was forbidden, David Debrandon Brown learned to sing through hymns. This religious foundation eventually evolved into a sophisticated R&B sound, blending classic soul influences with contemporary production to redefine the genre's modern landscape.
Born in New Orleans, Louisiana, on September 25, 1985, the American singer-songwriter is professionally called Lucky Daye. After the devastation of Hurricane Katrina, he relocated to Tyler, Texas. Drawing from his musical heritage, he famously chose his stage name by appending an extra 'e' to 'Daye', inspired by Marvin Gaye's surname. He often cites Gaye, Stevie Wonder, Prince, and D'Angelo as primary influences.
Daye's career trajectory is marked by a transition from a competitive contestant to a prolific songwriter and solo star. In 2005, at age 19, he appeared on season 4 of American Idol. He reached the Top 20 with a cover of Sam Cooke's "A Change Is Gonna Come" before being eliminated. He spent years establishing himself behind the scenes, writing for artists like Ne-Yo, Boyz II Men, and Mary J. Blige between 2008 and 2017. He even contributed to Ariana Grande's unreleased tracks.
His breakthrough as a solo artist arrived with his debut studio album, Painted, released on May 24, 2019. The project, which compiled tracks from his first two EPs, earned four Grammy nominations, including Best R&B Album. Since then, Daye has continued to evolve, winning the Grammy for Best Progressive R&B Album for his 2021 EP, Table for Two. His latest projects, such as the 2024 release Algorithm, blend electronic and alternative elements with classic R&B, securing Grammy nominations for the record and its primary single, 'That’s You'.
