From Groningen's youth ranks to captaining Feyenoord and the Netherlands
In short: Born in Groningen to an Italian father and Dutch mother, Luciano Valente has rapidly ascended the tiers of professional football. After navigating relegation and promotion with Groningen, the attacking midfielder has secured a major move to Feyenoord, establishing himself as a rising star for both his club and the Dutch national team.
Luciano Valente's professional journey began in the youth sector of Groningen, where he secured a national under-17 championship in 2019. After signing his first professional contract in July 2021, he made his Eredivisie debut in August 2022 against Ajax. His early career was marked by the volatility of club fortunes; during the 2023–24 season, Groningen finished at the bottom of the Eredivisie, ending a 23-year stay in the top flight, before earning promotion back to the league as runners-up to Willem II.
A significant turning point occurred on 2 July 2025, when Valente signed a four-year contract with Feyenoord for a reported fee of approximately €7 million. His transition to the club was seamless, making his debut in a UEFA Champions League qualifier against Fenerbahçe on 6 August 2025. By February 2026, following the departure of Cyle Larin, he moved from squad number 40 to the prestigious number 10 shirt.
Valente's international career reflects his dual heritage. While he represented Italy at the under-19 and under-20 levels, he eventually committed to the Netherlands. After making his under-21 debut in March 2025, he was called up to the senior national team by head coach Ronald Koeman in November 2025. His rise was further cemented when he was designated Feyenoord's captain ahead of the 2026–27 season, earning a spot in the Eredivisie Team of the Month for his performances in August 2026.
Known for his strength, positioning, and chance-creation abilities, Valente has become a central figure in Dutch football. His ability to play multiple midfield roles has made him a versatile asset for both club and country, transitioning from a youth prospect in Groningen to a high-value captain at one of the Netherlands' premier clubs.
