From Montreal street courts to NBA champion: the rise of Luguentz Dort
In short: He went from playing soccer in Montreal to becoming an NBA Finals champion. Known as the 'Dorture Chamber' for his relentless defense, Luguentz Dort’s journey from an undrafted free agent to an All-Defensive First Team star is a masterclass in grit and physical evolution.
Born in Montreal to Haitian parents, Dort’s early years were defined by a transition from soccer goalkeeper to basketball player, influenced by his brothers. Growing up in Montréal-Dord, the sport provided a vital alternative to the street gangs that claimed some of his peers. His physical development was equally striking; at age 15, he stood just 5 feet 11 inches, but continued to grow approximately one inch per year throughout his teens.
Dort's path to the professional ranks was anything but linear. After a high-profile high school career that saw him move from Quebec to Florida to improve his academics and English, he became a top recruit for Arizona State. Despite his talent, he entered the 2019 NBA draft as an undrafted free agent. He initially joined the Oklahoma City Thunder on a two-way contract, proving his worth through high-effort defensive performances against stars like James Harden.
His tenure in Oklahoma City was marked by significant milestones, including a massive five-year, $87.5 million contract extension in 2022 and a career-high 42-point game in 2021. The pinnacle of his career arrived in June 2025, when he helped the Thunder secure an NBA title against the Indiana Pacers. Now playing for the Atlanta Hawks, Dort remains a cornerstone of the Canadian senior men's national team, having represented his country at the 2024 Paris Olympics.
