In short: Before becoming a masked luchador, Austin Matelson was a scholar of medieval literature. His path from a homeschooled academic to a professional wrestler involved navigating a severe hip injury, a reality television appearance, and a dramatic career evolution that saw him transition from a monster heel to a heroic face.

Matelson's intellectual background is rooted in academia. Before attending California State University, Northridge, he was entirely homeschooled. He eventually earned two history degrees from CSUN, including a B.A. in 2008 and an M.A. in 2010, with a master's concentration and thesis specifically in medieval literature.

His professional wrestling career began in 2009, but it was marked by significant physical and professional hurdles. In 2012, he signed a developmental contract with WWE, training under the name Judas Devlin. However, a severe hip injury suffered in March 2013 forced him into a two-year hiatus from 2014 to 2016. During this period, he pivoted to mainstream media, appearing on Access Hollywood and placing 5th as a contestant on Big Brother 17.

Matelson returned to the ring in 2016, eventually finding a distinct identity in Lucha Underground as the character Vibora. The name 'Luchasaurus' actually originated from fan chants during his debut in that promotion. He transitioned to All Elite Wrestling (AEW) in 2019, where he achieved significant success as one-half of Jurassic Express, winning the AEW World Tag Team Championship on January 5, 2022.

His career has been defined by complex character arcs. He moved from a 'monster heel' role under Christian Cage—where he was even renamed 'Killswitch' in late 2023—to a heroic face turn in September 2025. Despite his physical prowess, his career faced a recent life-threatening health crisis: in September 2024, he was hospitalized with double pneumonia, resulting in blood oxygen levels below 80% and potential permanent lung damage.
