The man who once outworked Lionel Messi in a defensive duel
In short: In the high-stakes world of elite football, few accolades carry more weight than being named 'tough' by Lionel Messi. For Spanish right-back Pablo Maffeo, this wasn't just hype—it was a testament to a specific style of man-marking that left one of history's greatest attackers searching for space.
Pablo Maffeo’s career is a study in the patient development of a modern defender. Born in Sant Joan Despí, he entered Espanyol's youth setup in 2003 before moving to Manchester City on July 3, 2013. His journey through the English system was marked by steady progression from the under-18 team to the Elite Development squad, eventually leading to his competitive debut in a UEFA Champions League play-off against Steaua București in August 2016.
Maffeo’s tactical identity is defined by his versatility and defensive tenacity. While he spent significant time on loan at clubs like Girona and VfB Stuttgart—where he played the full 90 minutes in his Bundesliga debut in 2018—it was a specific performance against Barcelona that cemented his reputation. By man-marking Messi with such effectiveness, Maffeo earned the rare distinction of being named by the Argentine legend as one of the toughest opponents he had ever faced.
His career trajectory highlights the complexity of modern football mobility. Despite his pedigree at Manchester City, Maffeo has navigated a diverse path through Spain’s divisions and Germany's Bundesliga. He eventually settled into a long-term role with Mallorca, where he made 160 appearances between 2021 and 2025. Interestingly, his international identity is equally multifaceted; while a youth international for Spain, he was also called up by Argentina manager Lionel Scaloni in late 2023 due to his mother's heritage.
