The teenage phenomenon rewriting the record books of professional hockey
In short: At just 17, he was the youngest Hobey Baker winner in decades. By 20, he was the captain of the San Jose Sharks. Macklin Celebrini is not just a rising star; he is a statistical anomaly currently challenging the legendary benchmarks set by Wayne Gretzky.
Macklin Celebrini’s ascent through the ranks of hockey is defined by unprecedented scoring efficiency. After a dominant freshman season at Boston University, where he led the nation with 1.69 points per game, he entered the NHL as the 2024 first overall draft pick. His impact was immediate; during the 2024–25 season, he became the first rookie in Sharks history to reach 40 points in just 45 games and set a franchise record for rookie points with 63.
The scale of his production is best understood through his comparison to the game's greatest icons. Aside from Wayne Gretzky, no other adolescent has achieved a 40-goal and 70-assist tally within one campaign, as demonstrated during 2025–26 by Celebrini. He also surpassed Gretzky's teenage-season mark by factoring into 46.2% of the Sharks' total goals. His ability to maintain high-volume scoring while assuming leadership roles is equally rare; at 19, he became the youngest alternate captain in San Jose history.
Beyond the NHL, Celebrini has become a cornerstone of the Canadian national program. He transitioned from a bronze-medal performance at the 2023 World U18 Championships to captaining the senior team at the 2026 World Championship. His international resume includes a silver medal at the 2026 Winter Olympics in Milan, where he was the tournament's leading goal scorer. As of late 2026, he stands as the youngest active captain in the NHL, leading a new era for the San Jose franchise.
