How a teenage winger shattered a decades-old scoring record in the OHL
In short: In 2020, Nicholas Robertson achieved something the Peterborough Petes had not seen in nearly thirty years. Amidst a global pandemic and a canceled season, the young winger proved his elite potential, becoming one of the youngest players to ever score in the NHL postseason.
Nicholas Robertson's ascent through professional hockey was marked by both rapid achievement and significant physical setbacks. After playing minor hockey in Southern California and moving to Michigan at age eight to pursue better opportunities, he entered the Ontario Hockey League (OHL) with the Peterborough Petes. His impact was immediate; during the 2019–20 season, he recorded 86 points, including 55 goals. He was the initial Petes athlete to net 50 goals during one season since Mike Harding and Jason Dawe in 1992–93.
This offensive explosion earned him the CHL Sportsman of the Year Award and a nomination for the Red Tilson Trophy as the OHL MVP. However, the pandemic disrupted the season, forcing Robertson to pivot to the NHL. He set a record as the youngest individual on any NHL roster throughout the 2020 Stanley Cup Qualifiers. He also joined Jack Hamilton (1943) and Ted Kennedy (1944) as the only players in Toronto Maple Leafs franchise history to score a playoff goal before their 19th birthday.
His professional journey has since been a battle against injury. After his debut, he suffered a series of setbacks, including a knee injury, a broken leg during the 2021–22 season, and a season-ending shoulder injury in December 2022. Despite these hurdles, Robertson has continued to navigate the professional ranks, moving from the Toronto Maple Leafs to the Pittsburgh Penguins in July 2026. His career reflects the volatile nature of professional sports, where elite talent must constantly overcome physical adversity to maintain a spot in the league.
