In short: Madball originated as a secondary project when Agnostic Front's vocalist allowed his seven-year-old half-brother to perform lead vocals. This transition from a mere side act into a cornerstone of the New York hardcore scene eventually saw the group release nine studio albums and achieve international recognition across several decades.

During the late 1980s, Agnostic Front members from New York first formed Madball as a secondary venture. The transition began when Agnostic Front's vocalist, Roger Miret, allowed his younger half-brother, Freddy Cricien, to perform lead vocals during their shows. Cricien, who was only seven years old at the time, became an unofficial mascot known as "Agnostic Fred" before eventually being given the nickname "Madball" by Vinnie Stigma.

The band officially formed in 1988, featuring most of Agnostic Front's members. Their first show in New Rochelle was originally intended for Agnostic Front, but because the bassist and guitarist were unavailable, Miret turned it into a Madball performance. Following Agnostic Front's disbandment in 1992, Madball became the members' flagship project. They gained significant prominence with their 1994 debut album, Set It Off, which is considered a classic of the hardcore genre.

The band's history is marked by several lineup shifts and a brief dissolution. In 2001, the group announced they were breaking up due to touring exhaustion and lineup disputes, but they reformed in 2002. In 2023, longtime guitarist Jorge "Hoya Roc" Guerra departed after 33 years with the band, citing financial hardships resulting from a decrease in activity.

Beyond the music, the band has maintained a significant cultural presence, participating in the N.Y.H.C. documentary in 1995 and collaborating with brands like Jack Daniel's in 2020. They remain active today, continuing to tour internationally and celebrating milestones like the 30th anniversary of their debut album.
