From high school standout to a record-breaking WNBA defensive force
In short: Makayla Timpson didn't just join the WNBA; she rewrote the record books at Florida State before doing so. Her trajectory from a Georgia high school standout to a multi-time All-ACC honoree showcases a masterclass in defensive evolution and consistent, high-impact growth.
Timpson's rise began at Early County High School in Georgia, where she established herself as a dominant force by averaging 22.7 points and 10.8 rebounds per game during her junior year. This foundation led her to Florida State, where she underwent a significant transformation. During her freshman season in 2021–22, she appeared in all 31 games but played a supporting role, averaging 6.6 points and 3.6 rebounds. However, her sophomore year marked a turning point; she started every game and jumped to 13.2 points and 8.8 rebounds per game, earning her first major accolades, including ACC Most Improved Player.
Her junior and senior years were defined by historic production. In the 2023–24 season, she set single-season program records for rebounds (341), blocked shots (87), and double-doubles (18). She improved upon her own marks the following year, setting new records with 350 rebounds and 103 blocks. She joined Sue Galkantas and Natasha Howard as the third individual to exceed 1,000 career rebounds in the program's history by 9 February 2025.
National acclaim for her defensive skills included being a Katrina McClain Award top-five finalist and a Naismith Defensive Player of the Year semifinalist. The Indiana Fever chose Timpson with the 19th overall pick during the 2025 WNBA draft as she moved into the professional ranks. While her rookie season involved a gradual integration into the rotation—averaging 2.6 points in 7.1 minutes per game—her impact grew significantly by July 2025. By 2026, she began securing larger roles, including her first career start on July 17 against the Seattle Storm. Her career is characterized by this steady climb: from a high school phenom to an all-time leader in double-doubles at Florida State, and finally to a versatile professional contributor for both the Indiana Fever and USK Praha in the Czech Women's Basketball League.
