The gritty underdog who rose from backup quarterback to head coach
In short: Major Applewhite’s career was defined by intense battles for the spotlight. From competing with blue-chip recruits at Texas to navigating coaching transitions at Alabama and Houston, his journey is a study in resilience, record-breaking performances, and the complex pressures of elite college football.
Major Lee Applewhite's football legacy began in the late 1990s as a standout quarterback for the Texas Longhorns. Though he often shared the spotlight with highly touted recruits like Chris Simms, Applewhite's impact was undeniable. He set eight school records during his tenure from 1998 to 2001, including a 97-yard touchdown pass—the longest in Texas history—and a single-game passing record of 473 yards during the 2001 Holiday Bowl, where he earned MVP honors.
His playing years were marked by both triumph and significant adversity. In 1998, he led the Longhorns to an 8–2 season, famously breaking Nebraska's 47-game home winning streak. However, his career also faced setbacks, including knee injuries and a high-profile loss to Texas A&M following a fumble. Beyond the field, Applewhite faced professional scrutiny in 2013 when he admitted to an inappropriate relationship with a student athletic trainer during the 2009 Fiesta Bowl, an incident that led to disciplinary action from the University of Texas.
Transitioning to coaching, Applewhite climbed the ranks through several major programs. After early roles at Syracuse and Rice, he joined Nick Saban's staff at Alabama as offensive coordinator in 2006, helping improve the Crimson Tide's offensive production. His coaching path later took him to the University of Houston, where he served as head coach from 2017 to 2018, and eventually to the University of South Alabama, where he took over the head coaching position in 2024.
