In short: A teenage sensation in Nice, Malang Sarr once stood as one of the world's most promising young talents. Yet, his career has been defined by complex loan spells, contract terminations, and a significant international decision that saw him switch allegiance from France to Senegal.

Born in Nice in 1999 to Senegalese immigrant parents, Sarr's rise was meteoric. An academy graduate of OGC Nice, he made his Ligue 1 debut on 14 August 2016 at age 17. That match was historic; by scoring a header in the 60th minute, he became only the second youngest player to score on his debut in the league, following Nigerian international Bartholomew Ogbeche. Following his first professional goal, he honoured those killed in the 2016 Nice terror attack. This achievement helped him reach over 100 appearances for the club before his departure.

His potential was recognized globally in February 2018, when the CIES Football Observatory ranked him as the fifth-most promising footballer under 20 years old. This momentum led to a high-profile move to Premier League club Chelsea in 2020 on a five-year deal, though his time in London was marked by several loan spells to Porto and Monaco. During his time in Portugal, he scored his only goal for Porto in a Taça da Liga fixture. He also secured a FIFA Club World Cup title with Chelsea in February 2022.

Sarr's career has also been shaped by the complexities of international eligibility. Having played for France's youth teams from the U16s through to the U21s, he had to decide on his nationality. Despite earlier hopes of playing for France, Sarr officially switched his allegiance to Senegal in 2026. He made his senior debut for Senegal in September 2026, eventually playing under coach Patrick Vieira during the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualification matches. After leaving Chelsea by mutual agreement in 2024, he joined Lens on a two-season deal. He later moved to the Saudi Pro League club Neom in 2026.
