From colonial outcasts to the 'Flames' of African football
In short: Before they were known as the Flames, Malawi’s national team was a product of British colonial administration. Their journey from Nyasaland to the continental stage is a study in persistence, marked by long droughts and unexpected upsets against global heavyweights.
The roots of the Malawi national football team stretch back to the era before 1966, when the squad competed under the name Nyasaland. Following independence, the team rebranded as the Flames. The transition into a professionalized structure began with Ron Meades, the first full-time coach, who was appointed by the British Council through the English Football Association specifically to lead the team during Republic Celebrations matches against Madagascar and Zambia.
The team's early history was defined by international exposure but also significant hurdles. Ray Batchelor served as coach for four years starting in 1967, guiding the squad through 23 friendly matches and two Olympic Games. While many coaches have led the Flames—including Brazilian Wander Moreira and British Ted Powell—the team has struggled with coaching stability; as of January 2019, only nine coaches had ever managed more than 20 games for the nation.
Malawi's path to prominence is punctuated by long intervals between major tournaments. They first qualified for the Africa Cup of Nations in 1984, finishing at the bottom of their group after a 3-0 loss to Algeria and a 2-2 draw with Nigeria. It took another 26 years for the team to return to the continental stage in 2010. In that tournament, they pulled off a major upset by defeating World Cup participants Algeria 3-0, featuring striker Russel Mwafulirwa as one of only two players active in Europe at the time.
The Flames have also found success in regional competitions, winning the CECAFA Cup in 1978, 1979, and 1988. Their modern era continues with a recent qualification for the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations and a fourth-place finish in the 2024 Four Nations Football Tournament.
