In short: In the 2009 NFL draft, scouts debated whether Malcolm Jenkins was better suited for cornerback or safety. After a standout collegiate career at Ohio State, Jenkins entered the league as a first-round pick, eventually proving his versatility by mastering the safety position and securing a championship.

Malcolm Jenkins' journey to professional stardom began at Ohio State, where he established himself as a premier defensive talent. After playing nickelback during his freshman year, he transitioned to cornerback, earning consensus first-team All-Big Ten honors in 2006. By his senior season in 2008, Jenkins was recognized as the nation's best defensive back, winning the prestigious Jim Thorpe Award after recording 57 tackles and three interceptions. During his time in college, he also demonstrated his athleticism by winning a state title in the 400 metres. He was initially ranked as the 61st cornerback prospect in the country during 2005.

His entry into the NFL was marked by both high expectations and immediate adaptation. Selected 14th overall by the New Orleans Saints in the 2009 draft, Jenkins initially competed for a cornerback role. However, following the addition of rookie Patrick Robinson in 2010, head coach Sean Payton officially transitioned Jenkins to the safety position. This move proved transformative, as Jenkins became a cornerstone of the Saints' defense. His versatility was further highlighted when he played both wide receiver and defensive back for his high school team. He grew up in Piscataway, New Jersey, where he helped his school secure three straight state titles.

The transition to safety coincided with significant team success. In his first season at the new position in 2010, Jenkins recorded 64 combined tackles and earned NFC Defensive Player of the Week honors twice. This performance helped lead the Saints to a victory in Super Bowl XLIV, where Jenkins contributed four solo tackles and a pass deflection in their 31–17 win over the Indianapolis Colts. Over his 13-season career, Jenkins' ability to adapt his skill set became a defining characteristic of his professional legacy. Beyond his defensive prowess, Jenkins also demonstrated his scoring ability by recording a pick-six touchdown during his rookie season. He has since become a member of the Omega Psi Phi fraternity.
