In short: Before they had a dedicated national squad, the Maldives relied on a single club to represent them on the world stage. From unexpected regional champions to record-breaking scoring feats, the history of Maldivian football is defined by intense rivalries and legendary individual performances.

The Maldives' journey in international football has seen dramatic shifts in structure and success. During the 1987 South Asian Games in Calcutta, the nation did not field a separately assembled national team. Instead, the Football Association of Maldives sent New Radiant, the winner of the Maldives National Championship, to represent the country under Sri Lankan coach Sumith Walpola. This early effort saw the club struggle in the group stage, suffering a 0–1 loss to Pakistan and a 0–5 defeat to India.

The nation's most significant era of success arrived during the SAFF Championship. In 2008, Maldives secured their first title by defeating India 1–0 in the final, a victory sparked by a Mukhthar Naseer goal from an Ali Ashfaq corner kick in the final three minutes. This achievement saw Ali Ashfaq named Best Player, and the team emerged as both the highest scorers and the team with the fewest goals conceded. They repeated this feat in 2018, again defeating India in the final to claim their second local title.

Individual brilliance has often defined Maldivian football, particularly through Ali Ashfaq. During the 2013 SAFF Championship, Ashfaq set several records, including scoring a double hat-trick in a 10–0 victory over Sri Lanka. This performance helped him reach 18 total SAFF Championship goals, surpassing the previous record of 12 held by India's IM Vijayan. Ashfaq's scoring prowess remains a cornerstone of the nation's footballing identity, even as the team continues to navigate the competitive landscape of the Asian Football Confederation.
