The defender who navigated transfer disputes, work permits, and legal injunctions
In short: From the pitch to the courtroom, Marcos Rojo’s career has been defined by more than just tackles. Whether facing disciplinary action over transfer requests or managing high-profile legal battles in the UK, the Argentine defender has mastered the art of surviving the beautiful game's most intense pressures.
Marcos Rojo’s journey through European football is a study in high-stakes movement. After winning the Copa Libertadores with Estudiantes in 2009, the Argentine defender moved to Spartak Moscow in December 2010. His path eventually led to Sporting CP in 2012, but his 2014 move to Manchester United was mired in controversy. Sporting's president, Bruno de Carvalho, alleged that third-party owners pressured the club into the €20 million sale, following Rojo's refusal to train after requesting a transfer.
His arrival in England was equally turbulent. Rojo initially faced delays in securing a work permit due to pending criminal charges in Argentina regarding a 2010 altercation with a neighbour. Even after joining United, he faced a £140,000 fine in 2015 after missing a pre-season tour in North America due to passport issues, an incident that reportedly angered manager Louis van Gaal. Off the pitch, he also navigated a 2014 blackmail allegation involving an affair, seeking a legal injunction to protect his privacy.
Despite these distractions, Rojo’s talent was undeniable. He earned 61 caps for Argentina between 2011 and 2019, notably being the only Argentine player named in the 2014 FIFA World Cup Castrol Index Top 11. His career has seen him transition from a promising left-back to a reliable centre-back, playing for major clubs including Boca Juniors and most recently Racing Club, where he carries the name 'Marcos R.'—a nod to the red colour of his rivals, Independiente.
