The record-breaking playmaker who fled a violent footballing landscape
In short: Papu Gómez didn't just break records; he navigated a career of extreme highs and lows. From setting Serie A assist records to fleeing a volatile political climate in Ukraine, his journey is a masterclass in the unpredictable nature of professional football.
Gómez's career is defined by significant milestones in Italy. After joining Catania in 2010, he became a cornerstone of their most successful era, helping the club reach its highest league position since the 1960s. During the 2019–20 season with Atalanta, he achieved a historic feat by providing the most assists in a single Serie A campaign, totaling sixteen. This period also saw him rise to captaincy and lead the club to a third-place finish in the 2018–19 season, securing a spot in the UEFA Champions League.
However, his path was marked by significant geographical and political hurdles. In 2013, Gómez moved to the Ukrainian Premier League side Metalist Kharkiv. His tenure was cut short by a combination of poor environmental conditions and a deteriorating political situation. He eventually refused to return to Ukraine, citing a state of panic and a lack of safety guarantees for his family. This exodus was part of a broader trend where the league's foreign player count plummeted from 170 to 60 within two years.
His international status also presents a unique regulatory story. Despite holding dual Argentine and Italian citizenship, FIFA ruled him ineligible to switch his national team allegiance. Because he represented Argentina at the youth level without holding a dual passport at that time, and lacks specific Italian lineage, he remains tied to the Argentine squad. This bond culminated in his participation in Argentina's 2022 FIFA World Cup victory, where he featured in the opening match and the Round of 16.
