From Oakland's perfect season to NFL stardom and sudden departure
In short: Before he was a first-round NFL draft pick, Marcus Peters was a multi-talented phenom in Oakland. His journey from a high school MVP to a professional standout was marked by incredible defensive instincts, though his path was often complicated by disciplinary hurdles and unexpected team trades.
Marcus Peters’ ascent began at McClymonds High School in Oakland, California. During his senior year, he was a dominant force, leading his team to a 12–0 perfect season and earning MVP honors for the Oakland Athletic League. His versatility was striking; alongside football, he excelled in track and field, winning both the 100 meters and 200 meters at the league championships. This athletic foundation propelled him to the University of Washington, where he eventually declared for the NFL draft in December 2014.
His professional career launched with a significant investment from the Kansas City Chiefs, who selected him 18th overall in the 2015 NFL draft. Peters signed a fully guaranteed four-year contract worth $9.58 million, including a $5.23 million signing bonus. His rookie season was nothing short of spectacular, earning him AP Defensive Rookie of the Year honors and a second-team All-Pro selection. He became only the fourth player in Chiefs history to win defensive rookie of the year, joining figures like Derrick Thomas.
However, his tenure in Kansas City was not without friction. Peters faced various disciplinary issues, including a suspension for a sideline tantrum during his college years and a later suspension in 2017 following an argument with a coach. In March 2018, the Chiefs traded him to the Los Angeles Rams in exchange for draft picks. This move followed a period of speculation regarding his relationship with the Chiefs' front office. After stints with the Rams, Ravens, and Raiders, Peters transitioned into coaching, currently serving as a head coach at McClymonds High School.
