In short: In 2004, Jason Peters was a 320-pound tight end who didn't make the NFL draft. Scouts were confused by his speed, but he eventually became one of the most decorated offensive tackles in league history. His journey from an overlooked

Jason Peters entered the NFL as an undrafted free agent in 2004, signing a modest two-year, $540,000 contract with the Buffalo Bills. Despite his size, he impressed scouts at the NFL Scouting Combine by running a 4.93s in the 40-yard dash, a feat that highlighted his unique athleticism for a man of his stature.

His path to stardom was unconventional. Originally a defensive tackle in college, Peters moved to tight end at the University of Arkansas before spending time practicing offensive line drills to prepare for the pros. This transition made him a "tweener"—too large for a traditional tight end role but lacking experience as a lineman. By 2006, he secured a regular role, marking the initial time a Bills offensive lineman appeared in the Pro Bowl after 2003.

Peters' career was defined by high-stakes negotiations and physical resilience. In 2008, he staged a high-profile holdout with the Bills, seeking a deal between $8 million and $11.5 million per season. He was eventually traded to the Philadelphia Eagles in 2009, where he signed a six-year, $60 million contract. Over the next decade, he became a mainstay for the Eagles, earning multiple Pro Bowl and All-Pro selections.

Even as he reached his 40s, Peters continued to defy age limits. In 2022, he became just the sixth offensive lineman in NFL history to play a game in his 40s. After 21 seasons of professional football, Peters announced his retirement on February 25, 2025, transitioning into a front-office role with the Seattle Seahawks. Beyond the field, his career was marked by notable moments, including a 2014 sideline brawl with the Washington Redskins and a 2017 ACL and MCL injury that kept him out of the season, though he still earned a Super Bowl ring with the Eagles' championship run.
