The striker who became 'Mr. Reliable' for German football
In short: In 2007, a young forward broke his hand and tore a knee ligament, only to return and lead his team to a historic championship. This is the story of Mario Gómez, the prolific marksman who defined an era of German dominance and became a symbol of resilience.
Mario Gómez first rose to prominence with VfB Stuttgart. During the 2006–07 season, he established himself as a premier goalscorer, contributing 14 goals and 7 assists. Despite a severe injury in March 2007 involving a broken hand and a torn knee ligament, he returned to the pitch in May to help secure the Bundesliga title. His performances were so impactful that he was named the German Footballer of the Year for 2007.
His move to Bayern Munich in 2009 for a then-record fee of €30–35 million marked a new chapter. While his first season was inconsistent, he became a cornerstone of the team's success in the 2010–11 season, finishing as the Bundesliga top scorer with 28 goals. He reached a milestone of 100 Bundesliga goals on May 7, 2011, and played a pivotal role in Bayern's 2013 campaign, where he helped the club secure a historic treble, including the UEFA Champions League.
Gómez's career was characterized by high-stakes reliability, earning him the nickname 'Mr. Zuverlässig' (Mr. Reliable) after scoring from a virtually unreachable pass against Werder Bremen. Throughout his career, he was a mainstay for the German national team, representing the country for 11 years between 2007 and 2018. He finished his international tenure as the top scorer at UEFA Euro 2012, cementing his legacy as one of the most consistent strikers of his generation.
