In short: He holds a Guinness World Record for missing three penalties in one match, yet became a club icon. From devastating knee tears to broken bones, Martín Palermo’s career was a relentless cycle of physical catastrophe and spectacular, improbable returns.

Known as 'Loco' or 'Titán,' the Argentine forward Martín Palermo built a career defined by resilience. While he is Boca Juniors' all-time leading scorer with 236 goals, his journey was frequently interrupted by severe injuries. In 1999, a complete tear of his anterior cruciate ligament occurred just as he reached his 100th goal in the Argentine First Division. He later faced another setback in 2008, suffering both an ACL and MCL tear during a match against Lanús. His professional journey began in 1992 at Estudiantes de La Plata, where he played for five seasons before his move to Boca Juniors. He eventually reached a milestone of 300 career goals during the 2010 Apertura.

His time in Spain with Villarreal was equally dramatic. In 2001, while celebrating a goal against Levante, a collapsing concrete wall broke both his tibia and fibula. Despite these setbacks, Palermo’s ability to score remained intact. He famously scored a 38.9-meter header for Boca Juniors in 2009 and even achieved a World Cup goal at age 36, scoring against Greece in the 2010 tournament. During his stint in the Spanish La Liga, he netted six goals in 1s7 matches for Villarreal. He also played for other Spanish clubs, including Real Betis and Alavés.

Palermo's international career saw extreme highs and lows. His failure to convert three penalties while playing Colombia in the 1999 Copa América earned him a place in the Guinness Book of World Records. However, he later earned a recall under Diego Maradona, scoring vital goals in 2010 World Cup qualifiers against Ghana and Peru. After retiring in 2011, he transitioned into management, leading clubs such as Godoy Cruz, Arsenal de Sarandí, and most recently, Platense. In the 2010 FIFA World Cup, his goal against Greece was a rebound from a shot by Lionel Messi. He officially concluded his 19-year senior playing career in June 2011.
