From record-breaking college star to NFL depth and offensive assistant
In short: Will Grier’s football journey is defined by extreme highs and unexpected setbacks. After setting national high school records and becoming a standout collegiate quarterback, he navigated a high-profile suspension and a series of NFL roster moves, eventually transitioning from the field to the coaching staff.
Will Grier's ascent began with a prolific high school career at Davidson Day School in North Carolina. As a senior, he achieved a remarkable stat line of 4,989 passing yards and 77 touchdowns, setting a North Carolina state record with 195 career touchdown passes. He was named Mr. Football USA and the Parade All-American Player of the Year for his dominance. The Carolina Panthers chose him during the 2019 NFL draft in the third round (100th overall).
His collegiate path was marked by both brilliance and controversy. While playing for the Florida Gators, Grier demonstrated his talent, notably throwing four touchdowns in a single half against Ole Miss in 2015. However, that same year, he received a one-year suspension after testing positive for the banned substance Ligandrol. Grier stated he was unaware the supplement was prohibited and had failed to clear it with team trainers.
Following his suspension and a subsequent transfer to West Virginia University, Grier became a standout performer. In 2017, he was named the Big 12 Offensive Newcomer of the Year after recording 3,490 passing yards and 36 total touchdowns. His collegiate achievements resulted in being picked by the Carolina Panthers at 100th overall in the 2019 NFL draft's third round.
Grier's professional career has been characterized by his role as a depth quarterback, moving through several NFL organizations including the Panthers, Dallas Cowboys, Cincinnati Bengals, New England Patriots, Los Angeles Chargers, Philadelphia Eagles, and eventually returning to the Panthers before retiring. Following his retirement, he transitioned into an offensive assistant role for the Dallas Cowboys.
