From high school quarterback to NFL tight end, the path of Luke Schoonmaker
In short: Born in 1998, Luke Schoonmaker navigated a challenging path to the NFL. After overcoming significant health setbacks in high school and serving as a reliable, blocking-focused backup at Michigan, he eventually seized his opportunity to start. Today, he plays as a professional tight end for the Dallas Cowboys.
Luke Schoonmaker’s journey to professional football began in Old Saybrook, Connecticut. His high school career was interrupted by mononucleosis and a ruptured spleen, forcing him to repeat his junior year. Despite these hurdles, he demonstrated versatility, leading his team to an 11-0 record as a starting quarterback and winning the NEPSAC Mike Atkins Bowl. By his fifth year, he was recognized as the top player in Connecticut, eventually committing to the University of Michigan.
At Michigan, Schoonmaker’s development was gradual. He spent his early years as a backup, often buried on the depth chart behind players like Sean McKeon and Erick All. During the 2021 season, he earned a reputation as a selfless, reliable blocker, contributing to an offensive line that won the Joe Moore Award. His patience was tested again in 2022 when he finally stepped into a starting role after an injury sidelined All. Despite battling his own shoulder injuries later that season, he finished with 35 receptions and 418 yards, helping the team secure a second consecutive Joe Moore Award.
Schoonmaker’s collegiate persistence paid off in 2023 when the Dallas Cowboys selected him in the second round of the NFL draft, 58th overall. Transitioning to the professional level, he appeared in all 17 games during his rookie season, recording eight receptions and two touchdowns. His first NFL score came on a one-yard catch against the Jets. His career trajectory highlights the value of adaptability, moving from a high school signal-caller to a specialized collegiate blocker, and finally to a professional tight end in the National Football League.
