In short: In 2020, Mark Sykes made a decision that redefined his footballing career. Having represented Northern Ireland at every youth level, the talented midfielder chose to switch his loyalty to the Republic of Ireland, making history as the first player from his birthplace to do so in decades.

Mark Sykes' journey through professional football is marked by a notable shift in international identity. Born in Belfast on 4 August 1997, Sykes began his career with Glenavon in Northern Ireland. His early talent was widely recognized; by March 2018, he was hailed by journalists as one of the most promising young players in the Irish League, and he earned the title of Ulster Young Footballer of the Year for the 2017–18 season.

While Sykes had a deep connection to Northern Ireland's youth setup—debuting for their under-21 side in September 2016 and earning 11 caps and 2 goals by early 2019—his path took a decisive turn in August 2020. He notified the Irish Football Association of his decision to decline senior selection, choosing to represent the Republic of Ireland instead.

This transition led to a historic milestone. On 20 November 2022, during a 1–0 victory over Malta, Sykes made his debut for the Republic of Ireland. In doing so, he became the first player born in Belfast to represent the Republic's senior team since 1946. Since that period of transition, he has been a consistent figure in the Republic's squads, including notable call-ups under manager Stephen Kenny in 2022.

On the club side, Sykes has navigated the English leagues with significant movement. After a successful stint at Oxford United, where he scored 12 goals in 137 appearances, he moved to Bristol City in July 2022. His time there included being voted the club's September Player of the Month in 2023. Following a contract extension in early 2025, he eventually joined Millwall on a two-year deal in July 2026.
