In short: During the 2010 NHL entry draft, Mark Stone entered the sixth round after being identified as a power forward whose skating skills were lacking. Yet, he would eventually lead his team to its first championship and become one of the few players in history to score a hat-trick in a Stanley Cup clinching game.

Stone's journey began with modest expectations. Drafted 178th overall by the Ottawa Senators, he was initially viewed as an unrefined talent. His early junior career with the Brandon Wheat Kings was marked by physical setbacks, including a concussion and thumb injury that hindered his scouting rank. Despite this, he developed into a standout player, eventually winning the Brad Hornung Trophy for being the WHL's most sportsmanlike player after finishing as the league's second-leading scorer in 2012.

His professional rise was defined by elite defensive awareness and consistency. After making his NHL debut in 2013, Stone became a perennial leader in takeaways, leading the league for three consecutive seasons between 2014 and 2017. He earned a reputation as one of the premier two-way forwards in the game, a feat that eventually led to him being named the first captain in Vegas Golden Knights history in 2021.

The pinnacle of his career arrived during the 2022–23 season, though it was nearly derailed by severe health issues. After undergoing two back surgeries within nine months—including a lumbar discectomy—Stone returned to help lead Vegas to their first Stanley Cup. In the clinching Game 5 against the Florida Panthers, he scored a hat-trick, a feat not achieved in an NHL final since Babe Dye in 1922.

Stone's career also highlights the complex mechanics of the NHL's salary cap. In early 2023, his placement on long-term injured reserve (LTIR) allowed Vegas to create cap space to improve their roster. While controversial to some fans, this move was a strategic maneuver that ultimately paved the way for the team's championship run once he was reactivated for the playoffs.
