How a personal phone call from Jürgen Klopp changed Serbian football history
In short: In 2016, a rising star in Belgrade faced a difficult choice. While scouts from giants like Juventus and Chelsea were watching, it wasn't a complex transfer negotiation that secured his future, but a direct, personal appeal from one of the world's most famous managers.
Marko Grujić’s ascent from the Red Star Belgrade youth system to the global stage is a masterclass in rapid professional progression. A native of Belgrade, Grujić rose through the ranks to become the captain of his generation at Red Star. His professional breakthrough arrived on 26 May 2013, in a match against Vojvodina. By the 2015–16 season, he was a vital component of a historic Red Star side that set a record with 19 consecutive victories, earning him a place in the SuperLiga Team of the Year.
The pivotal moment in his career occurred in early 2016. As high-profile European clubs including Milan, Chelsea, and Internazionale monitored his progress, Liverpool manager Jürgen Klopp took a personal approach. Klopp personally called Grujić to convince him to move to Anfield, while his assistant, Željko Buvač, traveled to Belgrade to finalize the details. Despite initial hesitation from Grujić's father, the move was confirmed on 6 January 2016, with a £5.1 million transfer fee. Grujić famously remarked that the opportunity led him to choose Liverpool over clubs like Barcelona or Real Madrid.
Since that landmark move, Grujić's career has been defined by significant transitions across Europe's top leagues. Following stints on loan at Cardiff City and Hertha BSC—where coach Pal Dardai described him as the club's best midfielder in two decades—he moved to Porto in 2020. His permanent transfer to the Portuguese club in 2021 was valued at over £10 million. Standing 6-foot-3-inches, his physical presence and passing range have frequently drawn comparisons to fellow Serbian midfielder Nemanja Matić, a moniker that has followed him through his international career with Serbia.
