The enduring presence of a modern footballing icon
In short: In an era of rapid-fire transfers and fleeting careers, one defensive midfielder has achieved something rare: becoming a club's all-time appearance record holder. Discover the journey of Marten de Roon, from Dutch youth prodigy to the bedrock of Atalanta's historic rise.
Born in Zwijndrecht on 29 March 1991, Marten de Roon’s path to footballing immortality began in the youth ranks of ASWH, Feyenoord, and Sparta Rotterdam. After making his Eredivisie debut in March 2010, he moved through the Dutch leagues with SC Heerenveen before making a transformative move to Italy in 2015 to join Atalanta.
De Roon's tenure at Atalanta is defined by both individual milestones and collective triumphs. Under manager Gian Piero Gasperini, he helped propel the club to a historic 3rd place finish in the 2018–19 season, securing their first UEFA Champions League group stage appearance. He became a fixture in the squad, eventually surpassing former captain Gianpaolo Bellini to become the club's all-time appearance maker in March 2026.
His career has also seen significant movement through Europe's top leagues. A £12 million transfer saw him join Middlesbrough in the Premier League in 2016, though his time in England was marked by the club's relegation in 2017. He later returned to Atalanta, where he achieved the distinction of being the first foreign player to reach 250 Serie A appearances for the club.
On the international stage, De Roon has been a mainstay for the Netherlands, representing the senior team since his 2016 debut against Luxembourg. Despite facing setbacks, such as a knee injury during the 2024 Coppa Italia final, his reliability earned him selection for major tournaments including the 2020 UEFA Euro, the 2022 FIFA World Cup, and the 2026 FIFA World Cup squad.
