The 'Black Unicorn' who transitioned from basketball star to NFL Pro Bowler
In short: Before he was a Super Bowl champion, Martellus Bennett was a dual-sport threat. After nearly choosing the NBA over college, he became a record-breaking tight end, proving that elite athleticism can thrive even when coaches fail to fully utilize a player's unique potential.
Martellus Bennett’s path to professional football was far from linear. A highly touted five-star recruit in 2005, he was ranked as the number one tight end and the eighth-best player in his class by Rivals.com. His versatility was evident early on; at Alief Taylor High School, he averaged 23 points and 8.2 rebounds per game in basketball, leading him to declare for the 2005 NBA draft. However, after scouts suggested a first-round selection was unlikely, he withdrew from the draft to enroll at Texas A&M.
At Texas A&M, Bennett demonstrated his rare ability to excel in multiple arenas, becoming the first athlete at the university since 1969 to letter in both football and basketball. While his college career was marked by high-level production—including setting a school record for receptions by a tight end with 105—it was also marked by debate. Many observers felt head coach Dennis Franchione failed to properly utilize Bennett's talent within a run-oriented offense.
Bennett’s NFL career spanned ten seasons and included stints with five different teams. He was a second-round pick for the Dallas Cowboys in 2008, where he worked under tight end Jason Witten. His career culminated in a Pro Bowl selection in 2015 and a Super Bowl LI victory with the New England Patriots, solidifying his legacy as a versatile, high-impact player.
Beyond the field, Bennett has embraced diverse identities. He has been described by himself as a 'black unicorn' and has transitioned into life as a children's author through his company, The Imagination Agency.
