From a three-star recruit to a Super Bowl standout
In short: Austin Hooper’s journey through the NFL is a masterclass in persistence. After entering the draft as a highly-rated prospect, he navigated roster battles, major injuries, and multiple team changes to cement his place as a reliable professional tight end.
Austin Manuel Hooper’s professional trajectory began with a significant leap in status. Originally rated as a three-star recruit out of De La Salle High School, he transitioned from a defensive end to a standout tight end at Stanford University. His collegiate performance, including a 2015 season where he earned First-team All-Pac-12 honors and became a John Mackey Award finalist, propelled him into the 2016 NFL Draft.
Selected 81st overall by the Atlanta Falcons in the third round, Hooper entered a league where tight end depth was notably thin. He quickly proved his value, scoring a 19-yard touchdown in Super Bowl LI during the Falcons' overtime loss to the New England Patriots. His tenure in Atlanta was marked by both dominance and physical setbacks, including a grade-2 knee sprain in 2016 and an MCL sprain in 2019.
Hooper's career is characterized by his ability to adapt to new systems and cities. Following his time in Atlanta, he secured a massive four-year, $44 million contract with the Cleveland Browns in 2020. He has since moved through several organizations, including the Tennessee Titans, Las Vegas Raiders, and New England Patriots. Even as a veteran, his impact remained measurable, such as his 2025 season with the Patriots where he recorded 21 receptions and two touchdowns.
Beyond the statistics, Hooper's career reflects the high-stakes volatility of professional football. From being a Pro Bowl replacement player in both 2019 and 2020 to navigating the release from Cleveland in 2022, his path illustrates the constant competition for roster spots in the NFL.
