How Mason Miller transformed from a homeschooled college student into baseball's most feared closer
In short: Known as the Reaper, Mason Miller has redefined modern relief pitching. From his diagnosis with Type 1 diabetes in college to throwing the fastest pitches in All-Star Game history, Miller has become a dominant force in Major League Baseball, setting records for velocity, strikeouts, and saves across two different franchises.
Born in 1998, Mason James Miller took an unconventional path to professional baseball. While homeschooled in Pennsylvania, he played for Bethel Park High School before attending Waynesburg University. It was during his sophomore year at Waynesburg that he was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes, a condition he has managed throughout his rise to the major leagues. After completing his collegiate career as a graduate student at Gardner-Webb University, he was selected by the Oakland Athletics in the 2021 MLB draft.
Miller’s professional trajectory shifted rapidly after his 2023 debut. Initially a starting pitcher, he faced early setbacks, including a ulnar collateral ligament sprain that sidelined him for much of his rookie season. To preserve his health, the Athletics transitioned him to a relief role in 2024. The move proved transformative. By July 2024, he was named an All-Star, where he threw a 103.6 MPH fastball—the fastest pitch in the event's history. He concluded his time in Oakland by setting the franchise record for rookie saves and throwing the fastest pitch ever recorded at the Oakland Coliseum.
Traded to the San Diego Padres in July 2025, Miller continued his ascent. He quickly became a cornerstone of the Padres' bullpen, notably pitching an immaculate inning against the Baltimore Orioles in September 2025. His dominance persisted into 2026, where he led the National League in saves and earned multiple Reliever of the Month honors. Beyond his on-field performance, Miller is an Eagle Scout and a committed Christian, bringing a disciplined approach that has seen him evolve from a college graduate into one of the most effective closing pitchers in the modern era of baseball.
