In this dark fantasy mystery, a rain-drenched city hides a secret army of homunculi.
In short: Master Detective Archives: Rain Code blends detective work with supernatural combat in a perpetually rainy city. Players control an amnesiac trainee who partners with a god of death to solve murder cases within an alternate dimension, uncovering a global conspiracy involving immortal beings and a corporate-controlled metropolis.
Released in 2023, Master Detective Archives: Rain Code was developed by Too Kyo Games and Spike Chunsoft. The project reunited key staff from the Danganronpa series, including scenario writer Kazutaka Kodaka and character designer Rui Komatsuzaki. Planning for the game began in 2016, with the team aiming for a dark fantasy aesthetic inspired by filmmaker Tim Burton, utilizing 3D models and a distinct psycho-pop visual style.
The narrative follows Yuma Kokohead, a detective who loses his memories in exchange for the aid of a shinigami. Together, they investigate Kanai Ward, a city isolated by a rain cloud generator and ruled by the Amaterasu Corporation. The gameplay shifts between exploring the city to gather evidence and entering the Mystery Labyrinth—a spiritual manifestation of a case where players must use logic and quick reflexes to defeat Mystery Phantoms and uncover the truth.
The central mystery reveals that Kanai Ward’s residents are homunculi created by the Unified Government. Yuma himself is revealed to be the first homunculus, created three years prior from the DNA of the World Detective Organization's leader, Number One. The city’s perpetual rain was a necessity to prevent these beings from turning feral under sunlight. By the game's conclusion, medical advancements allow homunculi to coexist with humanity, and Yuma departs to continue his work as a detective.
The title saw commercial success, selling over 300,000 copies worldwide by the end of July 2023. It initially launched on the Nintendo Switch before receiving an enhanced version, Rain Code +, in 2024 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and Windows. The game also features a series of downloadable content substories that explore the lives and cases of Yuma's fellow Master Detectives.
