How Matt Ryan transformed from a high-stakes college prospect into an NFL franchise leader
In short: Known as Matty Ice, Matt Ryan built a career defined by precision and resilience. From his record-breaking days at Boston College to leading the Atlanta Falcons to a Super Bowl appearance, his journey reflects the intense pressures of professional football and the evolution of a modern franchise quarterback.
Born in 1985, Matthew Thomas Ryan emerged as a standout athlete at Philadelphia's William Penn Charter School, where he captained three different sports teams. His collegiate career at Boston College solidified his reputation, culminating in a 2007 season where he earned the Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award and the Manning Award. Despite facing injuries, including a broken foot in 2006, Ryan remained a prolific passer, setting school records and leading the Eagles to multiple bowl victories before being selected third overall in the 2008 NFL draft.
Ryan’s transition to the NFL was immediate and impactful. Signing a $72 million contract before his professional debut, he quickly silenced critics by becoming the first rookie quarterback to start for the Falcons since 2001. His debut season earned him Offensive Rookie of the Year honors, as he led the team to their first playoff berth since 2004. By 2016, his performance peaked when he was named the NFL Most Valuable Player, steering the Falcons to Super Bowl LI.
Throughout his 15-season career, primarily with the Atlanta Falcons, Ryan established himself as a franchise cornerstone. He holds the club's all-time records for passing yards, touchdowns, attempts, and completions. His tenure included six playoff appearances and three division titles. After a final season with the Indianapolis Colts, Ryan retired and returned to the Falcons organization in 2026 as the president of football, marking a full circle for the quarterback who once defined the team's modern era.
