In short: Born in Bacup, Lancashire, Matty James has navigated the highs of Premier League promotion and the setbacks of major injury. From his early days in the Manchester United Academy to his current role at Wrexham, his career is a testament to professional resilience in the competitive world of English football.

Matty James' journey began in the Manchester United Academy, where he made his first under-18 appearance in October 2005 at just 14 years old. His rapid progression saw him named on the senior team bench on 24 May 2009, wearing the number 47 jersey, and he signed his first professional contract with the club in July 2009. During this period, he also featured in a 1–0 Lancashire Senior Cup victory over Bolton Wanderers.

A pivotal chapter began in May 2012 when James moved to Leicester City in a double transfer alongside Ritchie De Laet. His time with the Foxes was marked by significant achievement and misfortune. He was part of the squad that won the Championship trophy and earned promotion to the Premier League in the 2013–14 season, a campaign in which he was named Leicester City's Young Player of the Season. However, his progress was hampered by a ruptured anterior ligament in May 2015, an injury that sidelined him for the entirety of Leicester's historic 2015–16 Premier League championship season.

Following his recovery, James had stints with Barnsley and Coventry City before joining Bristol City on a three-year deal in June 2021. After being released by Bristol City in May 2024, he signed a short-term deal with Wrexham in October 2024, later securing an extension through the 2025–26 season. Beyond the pitch, James has demonstrated community spirit, donating two therapy tilt-in space chairs, valued at approximately £2,000, to Fairfield General Hospital in 2020, where his mother, Maxine, works as a nurse.
