In short: In 1987, a massive A$2 million offer tempted Jason Dunstall to return to his Queensland roots. Instead, he chose loyalty to Hawthorn, embarking on a career that saw him become one of only six players to ever surpass 1,000 career goals.

Jason Dunstall's ascent to greatness began in the Queensland Australian Football League, where he was the leading goalkicker in 1984 with 73 goals. While he initially sought a move to Carlton, a lack of interest from the club and a rejected training offer from Fitzroy led him to Hawthorn in 1985. There, he evolved into a premier 'big-bodied' full-forward, combining the strength to out-wrestle opponents with the agility of a modern lead-up forward.

His statistical dominance was unparalleled. In 1988, he became the first Queenslander to win a Coleman Medal, finishing the season with 124 goals. He followed this with a 1989 season featuring 138 goals and a 1991 campaign where he reached 145 goals in the home-and-away series. His scoring prowess reached a peak in 1991 when he kicked a career-best 17 goals in a single match against Richmond, narrowly missing the all-time record held by Fred Fanning.

Beyond the numbers, Dunstall's career was defined by resilience and leadership. Despite facing severe injuries—including a serious head injury in 1990 and a knee reconstruction in 1996—he remained a pillar of the Hawthorn Football Club, winning four premierships between 1986 and 1991. After retiring in 1998, he transitioned into a prominent media personality and served as interim CEO of Hawthorn. In 2024, his immense contribution to the sport was cemented when he was elevated to Legend status in the Australian Football Hall of Fame.
