The Honduran utility player making history in Major League Baseball
In short: At age 15, a chance encounter with a mission group changed Mauricio Dubón's life forever. Moving from San Pedro Sula to California, he transformed from a talented youth into a historic MLB star, becoming the first Honduran to win a World Series and secure a Gold Glove Award.
Born in San Pedro Sula, Honduras, Dubón's path to professional baseball began when a visiting Christian mission group invited him to the United States to refine his skills. After enrolling at Capital Christian High School in Sacramento, California, he was drafted by the Boston Red Sox in the 26th round of the 2013 MLB draft.
Dubón's career is defined by a series of historic milestones for Honduran athletes. In 2022, while playing for the Houston Astros, he became the first Honduran to appear in the MLB playoffs and the first to win a World Series title, following the Astros' victory over the Philadelphia Phillies. He followed this achievement in 2023 by becoming the first Honduran player to win a Gold Glove Award, specifically for his performance as a utility player.
His versatility has been a cornerstone of his success in the Major Leagues. Over his career, he has played significant roles at second base, shortstop, center field, and left field. In 2023, he demonstrated his unique impact during a game against the Texas Rangers, where he and teammate Jose Altuve hit back-to-back home runs as the ninth and leadoff hitters—a feat never before recorded in MLB history.
Beyond the diamond, Dubón's legacy is being cemented in his home country. A planned baseball stadium in Juticalpa, Olancho, is set to be named the Estadio Mauricio Dubón, honoring his unprecedented ascent from a foreign exchange student to a Major League champion.
