From elite recruit to analyst: the shifting career of Max Browne
In short: Max Browne was once hailed as the premier quarterback recruit in his class. Yet, his journey through the high-stakes world of college football was defined by fierce competition, injury setbacks, and a complete pivot from the field to the broadcast booth.
Born in Sammamish, Washington, Browne arrived on the national stage as a standout high school athlete. During his time at Skyline High School, he achieved remarkable statistics, including a 73.5 percent completion rate, 12,951 passing yards, and 146 touchdowns. These performances earned him the Gatorade Player of the Year title for Washington in both 2011 and 2012, and he was eventually named the U.S. Army Player of the Year at the 2013 U.S. Army All-American Bowl.
His collegiate career was marked by intense battles for the starting role. At the University of Southern California (USC), Browne faced competition from Cody Kessler and Sam Darnold. Despite being the presumptive starter in 2016, he was eventually replaced by Darnold, leading to his transfer to the University of Pittsburgh as a graduate transfer in December 2016. At Pitt, Browne experienced both triumph and frustration, including a dominant 42–10 victory over Rice where he threw for 410 yards and four touchdowns, but he was also eventually replaced by Ben DiNucci.
Physical setbacks and professional shifts defined his later years. A shoulder injury sustained during a game against Syracuse on October 7, 2017, required surgery and ended his season. After failing to secure an NFL contract following a 2018 tryout with the Pittsburgh Steelers, Browne transitioned into media. He began analyzing Pac-12 teams on YouTube in 2018, eventually moving into professional broadcasting with KABC, CW Sports, and ultimately joining ESPN in 2025.
