From high school MVP to World Cup squad: the rapid rise of Max Arfsten
In short: In just a few years, Max Arfsten transitioned from a standout high school player to a professional athlete competing on the world stage. His journey through college, MLS, and international duty highlights the intense trajectory possible for a modern soccer talent with exceptional technical ability.
Born on April 19, 2001, Arfsten's ascent began with a prolific high school career at San Joaquin Memorial. During his junior year, he secured league MVP honors after recording 20 goals and 21 assists. This offensive prowess continued through his final season, where he tallied 50 goals and 20 assists, helping his team secure both league and Central Section championships.
After a stint at the University of California, Davis, where he was named the 2021 Big West Offensive Player of the Year, Arfsten bypassed further collegiate play to enter the professional ranks. He first signed with San Jose Earthquakes II in 2022, scoring nine goals in 24 appearances before being selected 14th overall by the Columbus Crew in the 2023 MLS SuperDraft. His impact was immediate; he scored in his debut for Columbus and contributed to the club's MLS Cup victory during the 2023 playoffs.
By 2024, Arfsten had become a fixture in the Columbus Crew lineup, playing a key role in their Leagues Cup victory and a CONCACAF Champions Cup semifinal run. His global prominence grew during early 2025 after Mauricio Pochettino selected him for the United States squad. Following a standout performance in the 2025 CONCACAF Gold Cup, where he scored in the semifinals against Panama, he was selected for the 2026 FIFA World Cup squad. His success eventually led to a move to the English EFL Championship with Middlesbrough in August 2026.
Known for his technical ability and a preference for dribbling to create chances, the Armenian-American player cites Neymar as his primary inspiration.
