From number one prospect to NFL journeyman: the rise and fall of Matt Barkley
In short: In 2009, analysts predicted Matt Barkley would be the NFL's top overall pick. Yet, a series of injuries and shifting draft stocks transformed the USC superstar into a player who traversed 11 different NFL franchises, serving largely as a reliable, if overlooked, backup.
Matt Barkley’s ascent began with unprecedented high school dominance. At Mater Dei, he became the first freshman quarterback to start since Todd Marinovich and eventually set the all-time passing yardage record for Orange County. By 2007, his performance earned him both the Gatorade National Player of the Year and National Male Athlete of the Year awards, a feat achieved by no other non-senior in the award's history.
His collegiate career at USC was marked by brilliant flashes and physical setbacks. As a true freshman in 2009, he became the first to start an opener for a preseason top-five team since 1975. His sophomore season in 2011 was statistically historic; he set single-game records for completions and passing yards, and threw six touchdowns in a single game against Colorado. Despite being projected as a first-round talent, a shoulder injury sustained against UCLA in 2012 significantly impacted his draft stock.
The professional transition proved volatile. While the Philadelphia Eagles selected him in the fourth round of the 2013 NFL draft, Barkley struggled to secure a permanent starting role. He experienced brief moments of prominence, such as starting for the Chicago Bears in 2016, but his career became defined by movement between rosters, including stints with the Cardinals, 49ers, Bengals, and Bills. Even his notable touchdown catch for the Bears in 2016 served more as a precursor to the famous 'Philly Special' than a personal career milestone.
