The evolution of a roadster from SLK to SLC
In short: Mercedes-Benz didn't just change a badge; they reimagined a legacy. The R172 generation bridged the gap between 1950s heritage and modern performance, eventually trading its original name for a tribute to a classic era of automotive history.
Launched in January 2011, the third-generation SLK-Class (R172) served as the successor to the 2004 R171 series. While it maintained the core design themes of its predecessors, it introduced a distinct visual language. The front end drew inspiration from the Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG Coupé and the CLS-Class (W218), while its radiator air intake paid homage to the iconic 1950s 190 SL roadster. The vehicle was defined by its versatility, most notably the Vario Roof. This two-piece metal folding system offered three distinct configurations: a body-colored roof, a panoramic version with dark-tinted windows, or the premium MAGIC SKY CONTROL. The vehicle's physical footprint measured 4,134 mm in length and 1,817 mm in width. For enthusiasts, an "Edition 1" model was available featuring a unique SHAPE paint finish in glacier grey. This special version also included a Dynamic Handling package and AMG bodystyling.
The latter utilized smart glass technology to transition the glass roof from fully transparent to tinted at the touch of a button. A significant pivot occurred in December 2015. To mark the 20th anniversary of the original SLK, Mercedes-Benz renamed the model the SLC-Class, a nameplate revised from the C107. This transition saw a shift in powertrain diversity, including the introduction of the first diesel-powered SLK-class (the 250 CDI) and a range of turbocharged four-cylinder engines. The lineup eventually concluded with the 2020 model year, leaving a legacy of high-performance AMG variants and efficiency-focused BlueEFFICIENCY models.
