In short: Michael Reiziger’s footballing journey spans the elite of European competition. After winning the Champions League with Ajax, the Dutch defender navigated high-stakes moves to Barcelona and A.C. Milan, eventually transitioning from a versatile player to a significant figure in Dutch coaching.

Born in Amstelveen on 3 May 1973 to Surinamese parents, Michael Reiziger began his professional ascent at his hometown club, Ajax. After making his first-team debut at age 17, he underwent loan spells at Volendam and Groningen. During the 1993–94 season at Groningen, he demonstrated his versatility by scoring a career-high six goals while playing as a midfielder.

Reiziger's career reached a pinnacle during the 1994–95 season when he helped Ajax secure the UEFA Champions League title. This success paved the way for a decade of international play with the Netherlands, where he earned 72 caps. His tenure included competing in three European Championships and the 1998 World Cup, where the Dutch side finished in fourth place.

His club career was marked by significant moves across Europe. Following a season at A.C. Milan that was hampered by injury, he joined Barcelona in 1996, arriving alongside former Ajax manager Louis van Gaal. During his seven years in Spain, he made 249 official appearances and secured back-to-back La Liga titles. Later, he played for Middlesbrough and PSV Eindhoven, where he was reunited with national teammate Patrick Kluivert.

Since retiring from professional play, Reiziger has dedicated himself to management. After coaching Ajax's reserves to an Eerste Divisie title in his first season as manager, he served as an assistant coach for the Ajax first team from 2019 until 2023. As of 2023, he has taken charge as the manager of the Netherlands under-21 team.
