The Michigan Panthers were a professional football experiment that faced a complex, short-lived existence.
In short: Born from a 2021 announcement, the Michigan Panthers navigated a turbulent path through the USFL and UFL. From playing home games in Alabama to securing a Detroit stadium, the franchise faced high costs, leadership shifts, and eventual discontinuation, leaving behind a legacy of ambitious, albeit ultimately unresolved, professional football aspirations.
The Michigan Panthers were officially unveiled as a USFL franchise in November 2021. Under the ownership of Dwayne Johnson’s Alpha Acquico and the Fox Corporation, the team began its journey with Jeff Fisher as head coach and general manager. Their inaugural 2022 season saw them select quarterback Shea Patterson with the first overall draft pick, though the team struggled, recording only two victories throughout the year. One of these wins against the Pittsburgh Maulers secured the team the top selection in the following year's draft.
Following a 2022 season where all USFL teams played in Birmingham, Alabama, the Panthers relocated to Michigan in 2023, establishing Ford Field as their home. Leadership changes occurred frequently; Mike Nolan replaced Fisher in early 2023, and Steve Kazor took over as general manager in late 2022. The team's tenure was marked by financial strain, particularly due to a $500,000 per-game rent at Ford Field—the highest in the UFL. These costs, combined with operational friction, complicated the team's future despite a notable rise in ticket sales during 2025.
The landscape of the league shifted significantly with the 2024 merger between the USFL and XFL, forming the United Football League. By October 2025, the UFL announced the discontinuation of the Panthers. Although there were discussions regarding a potential return tied to the future construction of AlumniFi Field, the league ultimately awarded the final expansion slot for 2028 to a Salt Lake City franchise. The Panthers' history remains a case study in the logistical and economic challenges inherent in maintaining professional football franchises outside the established NFL framework.
