From courtroom attorney to the front lines of New York politics
In short: After practicing law in New York City, Mike LiPetri transitioned from the courtroom to the State Assembly. His political career has been marked by high-stakes elections, legislative battles over public safety, and a persistent pursuit of federal office in New York's shifting political landscape.
Born on July 10, 1990, Mike LiPetri began his professional life in the legal sector. Following his 2015 Albany Law School graduation, he acted as assistant corporation counsel within the New York City Law Department, defending municipal officers and the city. He also spent time as an associate attorney at the firm Rivkin Radler, LLP.
LiPetri entered the political arena in 2018, when he defeated incumbent Christine Pellegrino in the general election with 56% of the vote. As a New York State Assemblyman representing the 9th district, his legislative focus included environmental protections and public safety. He successfully sponsored legislation to ban products containing the carcinogen 1,4-dioxane—a substance found in Long Island tap water—and supported bills to allow water suppliers to sue polluters. His safety-oriented proposals included a bill to make assaulting police officers with liquids a felony and legislation to increase penalties for sex crimes involving minors.
His trajectory toward Congress has seen both primary challenges and general election defeats. In 2020, following the retirement announcement of long-serving Representative Peter T. King, LiPetri sought the Republican nomination for New York's 2nd congressional district but lost to Andrew Garbarino. In 2024, after redistricting, he became the Republican nominee for the 3rd congressional district, where he was defeated by Democrat Tom Suozzi. Despite these setbacks, LiPetri remains active in the political sphere, having announced his candidacy for the 3rd district again for the 2026 election cycle.
