In short: Mike Kafka’s career is a masterclass in persistence. After six seasons as a professional quarterback journeyman, he transitioned from the sidelines to the center of the action, helping lead the Kansas City Chiefs to Super Bowl glory and eventually rising to the helm of the New York Giants.

Mike Kafka's path through professional football is defined by a remarkable evolution from player to strategist. Born in Chicago in 1987, Kafka first rose to prominence as a standout quarterback for the Northwestern Wildcats. His collegiate career was marked by historic individual performances, such as setting a school record with 16 consecutive completions against Syracuse in 2009 and establishing a Big Ten quarterback rushing record with 217 yards against Minnesota in the same season.

His professional playing career, while characterized by the label of a 'journeman,' saw him navigate the rosters of several NFL franchises. Following his fourth-round selection by Philadelphia during the 2010 NFL draft, Kafka played for the Eagles, New England Patriots, Jacksonville Jaguars, Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Minnesota Vikings, Tennessee Titans, and Cincinnati Bengals. Despite the instability of frequent roster changes and injuries, such as a broken hand in 2012 that hindered his progress with the Eagles, he maintained a presence in the league for six seasons.

The true transformation occurred when Kafka moved into coaching. After serving as a graduate assistant at Northwestern in 2016, he joined the Kansas City Chiefs in 2017. His ascent was rapid: promoted to quarterbacks coach in 2018, he was part of the staff that saw Patrick Mahomes earn the NFL MVP award and the team secure Super Bowl LIV. This success paved the way for high-level leadership roles, including offensive coordinator and assistant head coach for the New York Giants, and eventually serving as the Giants' interim head coach in 2025. By 2026, he continued his coaching trajectory as the passing game coordinator for the Detroit Lions.
