From a 95-yard return to the NFL's first round
In short: Before becoming a first-round NFL draft pick, Mike Hughes played a pivotal role in UCF's undefeated 2017 season. A single 95-yard kickoff return in the War on I–4 helped save the Knights' championship run, marking the start of a professional career defined by high-stakes momentum and resilience.
Mike Hughes' journey to the NFL was marked by significant shifts in trajectory. After a suspension and departure from the University of North Carolina in 2015, he transferred to Garden City Community College before joining the University of Central Florida (UCF). At UCF, he became a standout during their undefeated 2017 season, which saw the team named National Champions by the Colley Matrix poll. Prior to his time at UCF, he spent a year at the University of North Carolina. This followed a period where he played quarterback for New Bern High School, leading them to a state championship.
His most iconic moment came on November 24, 2017, when a 95-yard kickoff return against the South Florida Bulls helped preserve the Knights' undefeated streak. Such a display aided his rise during the 2018 NFL draft, resulting in his first-round selection (30th pick) by the Minnesota Vikings. This momentum carried him through the draft process, where analysts like Jeff Legwold and Mike Mayock ranked him among the top cornerback prospects. He was eventually selected as the 30th overall pick.
His professional career has been a test of endurance. After a strong rookie season, he suffered a torn ACL on October 14, 2018, which sidelined him for the remainder of that season. Since then, he has moved between the Vikings, the Kansas City Chiefs, the Detroit Lions, and the Atlanta Falcons. Beyond his knee injury, he also faced challenges with a broken vertebra and neck injuries. These setbacks led to stints with the Kansas City Chiefs, Detroit Lions, and Atlanta Falcons.
