From high-school champion to NFL starter: the resilient journey of Mike White
In short: A standout high school player and elite baseball pitcher, Mike White transitioned into a professional football career defined by grit. After years of serving as a backup, he achieved a historic milestone in his first career start, proving his ability to perform under the brightest lights.
Mike White's path to the NFL was paved by a dominant senior year at NSU University School, where he was named the Class 3A Florida Player of the Year after leading his team to a state championship. His versatility was evident early on; beyond football, he was a highly regarded baseball pitcher, boasting a 9–2 win–loss record and a 0.43 earned run average during his junior year.
After a collegiate career split between the University of South Florida and Western Kentucky University, White entered the NFL in 2018. Despite being projected as a third or fourth-round pick by many experts, the Dallas Cowboys selected him in the fifth round. His professional journey was marked by several stints on practice squads and various teams, including the New York Jets, Miami Dolphins, Buffalo Bills, and Carolina Panthers.
White's most significant breakthrough occurred in 2021 while playing for the Jets. Following an injury to starter Zach Wilson, White made his regular season debut and subsequently recorded 405 passing yards and three touchdowns in his first career start against the Cincinnati Bengals. He became the inaugural Jets signal-caller to surpass 400 passing yards in a single match since Vinny Testaverde in 2000, while also being the first NFL quarterback to achieve this during a debut start since Cam Newton.
His resilience was tested in 2022 during a game against the Buffalo Bills, where he suffered multiple hard hits. It emerged subsequently that he had competed despite suffering five fractured ribs. Despite these injuries, White continued to navigate the competitive landscape of professional football, moving through various rosters and practice squads across the league.
